The Real Value of Retaining Experienced Staff

The Real Value of Retaining Experienced Staff

In every school, there are people who quietly carry a depth of knowledge that can’t be found in a handbook. They know the systems, the quirks, the personalities and the unwritten rules that make things run smoothly. When those people leave, the loss is often felt far beyond their job title.

Recruitment naturally grabs the spotlight and is the hot topic of conversation around school staffing. However, retention deserves just as much attention. High turnover doesn’t just mean another advert to post; it often means a dip in productivity, increased pressure on remaining staff and a disruption to the culture and continuity that schools have worked hard to build.

Experience has a compounding effect. Long-serving staff bring perspective, consistency and stability. They’re often the mentors for new colleagues and the ones who can anticipate challenges before they escalate. Retention of these staff isnt about loyalty, its the loss of safeguarding, the collective memory and resilience of the school if they were to leave.

The truth is that retention doesn't have to be bourn from high cost, complex and time demanding initiatives. It often comes down to a few simple but powerful things:

·  Respect and trust - empowering people to make decisions and recognising the value of their judgement.

·  Opportunities to grow - not everyone wants promotion, but most want to feel they’re still developing.

·  Being listened to - given staff a platform, a way of being able to contribute to the wider school. For some that’s staff meetings where ideas are welcomed, for others it can simply be a channel of having their voice heard, in a not so public setting.

·  Work-life balance - recognising that personal circumstances change over time and adapting where possible.

Retention doesn’t always require grand initiatives. Often, it’s about genuine relationships, honest communication and small moments of appreciation that make people feel seen.
