January Recruitment
As we approach the end of January (eventually!) it's always a big one for recruitment.
Over the Christmas break, a lot of school support roles get advertised. By now, interviews are either starting, scheduled, or hopefully done and naturally, schools are hoping that appointments will follow.
Often, they don’t. And there are a few reasons why.
Holiday applications can be misleading. Lots of CVs doesn’t always mean lots of committed candidates. Some applications are speculative, some rushed, and some simply came from people with time to browse job boards while everyone else was eating mince pies.
The best candidates aren’t always actively looking. Experienced Finance, HR, IT and Operations professionals are often already in post. They might not even notice Christmas advertising, but they could be open to a conversation if the right opportunity comes along.
January reflection changes things. Candidates who applied in December out of frustration or end-of-term stress might think twice once the new term begins. What felt urgent a few weeks ago can suddenly feel less so when a real resignation and interview are on the table.
Interviews reveal the gaps that CVs can’t. Cultural fit, practical experience, and readiness for responsibility only really show themselves in conversation. This is why some roles still aren’t filled even after promising shortlists.
Timing, interviews, fit….it all matters.
January can feel busy, hopeful, and tricky all at once. That’s why having a backup plan, a trusted network, or some recruitment support in place can make all the difference when the ideal candidate isn’t quite ready to step forward.
The schools that handle January most confidently aren’t necessarily the ones that advertise first, they’re the ones that are prepared, flexible, and know how to reach the right people when it counts.
